Materials used in the construction of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Natural Gas Reticulation System must be compatible with the properties of the gas.
They must have the necessary properties such as good mechanical strength, ductility, resistance against gas attack and environmental degradation. LPG and Natural Gas will cause natural rubber and some plastics to deteriorate.
Hence, installers and users should only use hoses and other equipment specifically designed for these gases.
Malaysian Standard MS830 and MS930 clearly stipulate the list of materials and the specifications acceptable for gas reticulation systems shall be as below:
Item Material Specification
1. Steel ASTM 106 or API 5L Grade B
2. Copper EN 1057
3 Polyethylene ASTM D2513 or ISO 4437
Carbon Steel is the most commonly used piping material with no limitations of piping operating pressure due to its good mechanical properties.
Medium and High Density Polyethylene (MDPE) pipes may be used for buried or underground installation with operating pressures of not exceeding 60 psig (414kPa)
MDPE Pipe and Valve Installation |
Copper pipes (seamless) maybe used in vapor phase systems only with operating pressure of not exceeding 20 psig (140kPa)
Underground carbon steel vessels and pipes need to be protected from corrosion by using protective coatings and cathodic protection system.
Pipe fittings shall be steel, copper or polyethylene.
Pressure containing metal parts of valves (except appliance valves) including excess flow valve, non return valves, safety relief valves and manual shut off valves used in piping system shall b of steel, ductile (modular) iron, malleable iron or brass.
